BEFORE & AFTER: MAGNOLIA BEDROOM

I just came across these photos the other day and was struck by the transformation.  What do you think?

AFTER
December 2012
I've been told this 2nd story room on the north side of the house was used as the family room by the previous owners.  It is now my daughter's bedroom.

BEFORE & AFTER: MUSIC ROOM

What used to be a radiator on the west wall of this room is now the location of a new door which opens onto a 14 x 17 2nd floor deck atop the new addition on the back of the house.  Wallace designed and Roy Hoffert fabricated the sturdy industrial shelving.

No lack of auditory stimulation in this house.  You name a music  genre, he probably has at least a "taste" of it.  I hear tell there is a form of cataloging to the collection but I have not figured it out yet.

BEFORE & AFTER: BACK STAIRS

BEFORE:
First viewing of back stairwell, February 2011
(Plaster was falling off of the walls and ceiling.  The support to the stairs had been cut to accommodate a washer and dryer below.  Window sill and trim had been chewed past repair by some creature...Can you say squirrel or raccoon?  Kind of scary.)

AFTER: Back stairwell
December 2012

It is now safe to traverse this stairway.  In fact, it is my favorite route to take each morning to the kitchen below.

BEFORE & AFTER: LITTLE SINK

March 2011

Sept. 2012

The chrome was replated  here in Richmond, Va. at Hanlon Plating Company,  most known for their work on restoring chrome on  vintage cars and motorcycles. They also did the claw feet on our tub.

A PEEK INTO MY NEW KITCHEN

It is time for another BEFORE and AFTER post.  Warning: Extremely squeamish souls might want to scroll down fast or skip this post altogether.  Mind you, I have not posted a couple of the worst 'before' photos because my stomach tends to heave when I look at them.

BEFORE

Sink - March 2011

Under stairs - March 2011
(Our refrigerator now resides in this location)

Kitchen - March 2011
Now, try to ignore the cleaning and construction clutter on the counter tops as you grab a peak of the 'after'.

BEFORE & AFTER

I am a fan of the before and after shot, especially when there is such a dramatic change.   There will be many such comparisons with this house.   Here is just one to get started...

BASEMENT WINDOWS...BEFORE

BASEMENT WINDOWS...AFTER

The windows are new replacement windows and the brick bays we have had built using the old brick from the collapsing chimneys.  We think the brick mason did a great job matching the style of the original foundation.  Not only has this renovation resulted in a more pleasing aesthetic, but also it has made the house more secure and protected from rains.

Note : The drip cap and trim above the windows is also new.  Large sections of the original trim had rotted due to long time water damage (see the repair here).  We had the original trim duplicated and Wallace, Donnie and I installed it.
